Food In The 1950's And 60's

Year Three have been learning about the food people ate in the 1950s and 60s. Even though World War II had ended in 1945, there was still ‘food rationing’ in Britain in the early 1950s. Many families did not have a fridge and storing fresh food was difficult so it was put into tin cans which stopped the air getting in and meant the food would not go ‘off’ for many months. Food from hot countries had to travel long distances by ship so this food was also put in tin cans so it did not perish on the journey. The children enjoyed tasting tinned peaches and evaporated milk, sardines, spam and corned beef, according to their dietary needs.
