On Thursday, we held a special assembly for Fair Trade Fortnight 2019. Jackie and Martin from the Fair Trade ‘Justicia’ shop in Bolton town centre came in to school to lead the assembly. As our theme this year was a ‘Cocoa Challenge Fortnight’ with lots of competitions based around ‘cocoa’, Jackie and Martin helped the children to understand how the cocoa beans are grown, harvested, cleaned, packaged and transported across the world to chocolate factories.
They also focused on how many cocoa farmers in poor countries such as Africa, do not get a fair share of the profits made from selling bars of chocolate. However Fairtrade farmers DO get a fair price and can use the ‘Fair Trade Premium’ to help build hospitals, schools and water pumps within their communities. The message being: Buy Fair Trade.
